The 2010 Winter Olympics are just a few weeks away and part of the anticipation (at least for me) stems from having to wait to learn what designer Team USA will be wearing during the ceremonies. Well, the cat's out of the bag:

Ralph Lauren is outfitting the athletes.

It’s perfect, really, because Ralph Lauren is the epitome of all-American fashion, and what’s more all-American than the U.S. Olympic Team? Especially this year’s team. In addition to the fact that they’re representing the country in athletic competition, their classic good looks are so completely all-American that they could easily pass for R.L. models.

Another development in this year’s uniform is that it’ll be available to consumers. Not only can you purchase the same pieces the athletes will be wearing, but you can also create your own Team USA-inspired gear, should you be so inclined. Such items are available both on the website and in Ralph Lauren stores.

Tragedies such as this natural disaster certainly put things in perspective and it’s refreshing to see a site like Rue La La acknowledge it in this way.

Times are tough, money’s tight and the holidays didn’t help ease the tension between you and your checking account any. Worst of all, despite the parties being somewhat more spread out for now, there are still upcoming birthday dinners, dates and a hodge-podge of other social situations for which you’ll want to look your best (read: you’ll want a new outfit for sure).

Not to worry; for, although 2009 was a rough year in many ways, it did give rise to a handful of members-only bargain-shopping websites, particularly those of the timed-sale variety. Between the lot of them you can score apparel, shoes, accessories, house wares, novelty items and designer collections for men, women and children. Some sites even offer exclusive travel packages! What more could an economic-slump victim want? Here’s what you need to know:

Gilt Groupe (gilt.com). The most luxurious of the bunch, this site features collections from such labels as Missoni, Helmut Lang and Doo Ri. You’ll have to log in to the sale right when it starts for any shot at snagging your dream pieces, though—things fly outa here so fast it’ll make your head spin. Their sales also tend to be more current than some of the other sites’ sales. In other words, very little time seems to have passed since the items were in-season, such that the sales are still relevant when they hit gilt.com. Features include sections for men and juniors, as well as a travel site.

*TIP: Even if the site says the item you want is “unavailable” or “in another member’s cart” just keep clicking repeatedly on the “Buy Now” button. Each member can only hold something for 10 minutes before it goes back on the digital floor. So, you’ll have a chance at picking it out of the air while it’s in transit between some unfortunate slowpoke’s cart and the metaphorical display shelf. Trust me, I speak from experience. Plus, a customer service representative told me so.

HauteLook (hautelook.com). This site reminds me of T.J. Maxx or Marshalls in that you’ll find lots of recognizable, quality brands and are likely to get some good basics and random accent pieces, but, generally, it’s not exactly a gold mine. Once in a while, though, you’ll get hit with a Christian Louboutin or Decades Two (one of my favorite vintage vendors) sale and see stars, so stay on your toes. They also have sections for men, children and home, and boast the best beauty sales of the sites on this list.

Rue La La (ruelala.com). This site, too, is another hit-or-miss shopping experience. There are some really good finds mixed in, but you’ll have to search (i.e. read the “subject” line in your daily email alerts closely). Sometimes a men’s line or a travel package will be featured, but there are no specific sections for such items, so you’ll have to keep an eye out for those, too.

Ideeli (ideeli.com). You’ll find exciting collections here, but the prices are often noticeably less slashed than the prices featured on some of the other sites; you’ll have to determine what’s a reasonable asking price on a case-by-case basis. Their luggage sales stand out, however, as do their regular giveaway drawings—it’s the only site that offers anything free so frequently and you really can’t beat that!

*NOTE: Sale start times vary based on your membership “level.” The 2nd Row is the most basic level and is free. For a fee you can upgrade to the 1st Row and get access to sales earlier than 2nd Row members. You’ll also get access to some additional, exclusive 1st-row-only sales.

Billion Dollar Babes (billiondollarbabes.com). The coolest part about this female-focused site is that it hosts live, in-person sales, in addition to those that are online. There you can actually try stuff on before you buy it! Like Ideeli, you can opt to upgrade your membership. While $100 a year seems a bit steep, the VIP membership comes with a multitude of money-saving perks, including free U.S. shipping, advance entry into both online and “real world” sales, and a discount card that’s accepted at Billion Dollar Babes' partner locations (restaurants and hotels to come soon).

theOutnet (theoutnet.com). It is because of their Flash Sales that this site made the list. Their Pop-Up Sales are straightforward, limited-time sales and their periodic Giveaways are self-explanatory, but their designer Going Going Gone sales are a bit more unique: They work like the stock market, except instead of randomly going back up in price, the item will just be gone. As the clock ticks, the price of the item goes down. You can wait to buy until the price is right, but you won’t know how many Xs (purses, pairs of shoes, necklaces, etc.) are available, so if you wait too long, you may miss out.

If you have trouble becoming a member of any of these sites (some are by invitation only), simply email me and I’ll be happy to send you an invite. Louisa at Large readers must never be excluded!

Right On, Rodarte!

Frugal Fashion

I’m thrilled to announce that come this Sunday, December 20, the Rodarte for Target collection will be available nationwide. Rodarte, one of my favorite shabby-chic lines (think Mary Kate Olsen) can be credited with single-handedly bringing back grungewear, particularly such tattered sweaters as were popular circa 1992, though their price point always hit a little high for my taste.

Now, however, in teaming with Target, Rodarte allows us to stock up on copious amounts of lace, tulle and sequins without breaking the bank (lord knows it doesn’t take much these days, am I right?). Get a preview of the full line below, so you'll know what to make a run for on Sunday; Rodarte lovers and Target shoppers aren’t the type to let things hang around for long!

Some prefer soft pinks and neutral beiges. Others prefer striking blacks and deep purples (that typically look like striking blacks). Many fall somewhere in between, with a penchant for hues ranging from fire-engine reds to powder blues. Despite the varying color preferences women express, most can agree on one thing: less chipping equals a better polish.

Enter: Minx. The new-age polish alternative comes in the form of a film that is pressed on using heat, whose chemical-free, foil-like consistency prevents chipping (so your mani lasts a lot longer) and nail damage (so your nail beds last a lot longer). What’s more, since they come in a wide range of colors and patterns, including shiny silver and slithery snakeskin, Minx has something for everyone. Yes, even you, picky polish peruser—if it’s good enough for Beyoncé and Blake, I do believe it’s good enough for you. To get your future on, stop by Entebello in Atlanta or visit minxnails.com for a list of salons in your area.

Congratulations to...
For the rest of my followers who didn’t win this time around: I’m sorry!

Here’s the deal: I get a lot of hits on this humble blog o’ mine, but the number of public followers (see left) does not reflect it and I’d like it to. So, for those of you who need an ultimatum to stand up—or at least push a button—and say, “I like Louisa at Large,” I’m giving you one.

Click the button at the top left (hint: it says, “Follow”) to become a public follower of Louisa at Large between now and midnight EST on November 15 and you’ll be entered to win this gorgeous Kenneth Jay Lane bib necklace. Fellas, you can re-gift it. I won't be offended and you'll get mad props (yes, I said, "mad props") from the lucky lady on the receiving end of the deal.

Oh, and FYI, bib necklaces are very in right now. As is frugal fashion. And, since KJL designed this limited edition, sold-out item for Avon, it definitely qualifies as such and you know I’m on board. Plus, the necklace is FREE for the winner, and you can't get fashion more frugally than that.

What will this mean for your life from now on? Literally, nothing. The only thing that will happen is the latest Louisa at Large blog posts will show up in your Google Reader if you have a Google account and if you ever check your reader... Exactly. You’ve got nothing to lose, but a potential Kenneth Jay Lane necklace to gain.

So, go on. Push the button. Everybody’s doing it.

If you’re already one of my beloved followers, don’t worry; you’ll automatically be entered to win.

Drawing will take place at midnight on November 15 and winner will be announced in a blog post.
The clothes we wear can act as windows into our belief systems,

views and values, whether or not we are conscious of it when dressing daily. It tells our peers, to some degree, what we deem wrong and right, with whom we identify and what our professional goals are. Some expressions are less subtle than others—graphic tees, for instance, can be quite blatant, with clear-cut messages splashed across the wearer’s chest like bumper stickers on another’s station wagon.

Much like freedom of speech, we possess every right to wear what we want and garment companies likewise possess the right to produce whatever they want, thus making it easier for us to find and wear whatever loaded products might appeal to us. At a certain point, though, before wearing something one must ask, “Is this okay?” and, in the case of a particularly politically charged product created and sold by the popular everyman’s brand, ZARA, I feel that I speak for the masses (or, at least, I sincerely hope I do) when I say, “No, this is not okay.”

The previously Louisa-loved ZARA, with which I became smitten when residing above a certain store location in Madrid, has gone too far in decorating a boho-inspired tote with Nazi swastikas. Aside from the evident irony (the ideals that accompany the bohemian style are of peace-making and love-spreading, far from the superiority complex and genocide tactics of the Third Reich), the accessory is ridden with offensive concepts and an appalling amount of ignorance. It’s shocking enough that the Spanish company thought such a statement was acceptable, but are the brains behind ZARA so shortsighted that this was thought to be a good business decision? Obviously, the presence of swastikas isolates a giant sector of ZARA’s customer base (ZARA products have been historically popular in Israel), but, what’s more, the company may very well drive away an additional, less apparent population made up simply of rationally-thinking, value-driven individuals, religious beliefs aside.

Since the release of the bag (and the subsequent backlash against it), ZARA has said that the bag was outsourced to an external supplier and that the swastikas were not present at the time of selection. "Had the symbol been seen we would not have sourced that particular handbag," said ZARA spokesperson Susan Suett. ZARA has now withdrawn the bag from sales floors. Nevertheless, despite the claim that this particular misstep was a mistake, it is certainly not an isolated incident when it comes to seeming anti-Semitism from the brand: In an attempt to “respond” to tension in the Middle East, ZARA had previously removed the Israeli flag from the long list of international graphics displayed on their product labels (whenever a ZARA store opens in a new country, that country’s flag is added to the ZARA price tag). As if feigning disassociation would accomplish something productive…?

As far as this swastika situation being a supposed accident, you will, of course, have to form your own opinion, but I’m perfectly clear on mine. I urge all moral consumers to join me in taking a stand against this fascist fashion house: Boycott ZARA. Let them know that no amount of aesthetic can disguise what a symbol like the swastika represents; whether the tags remain on or are pulled off our garments, and whether or not there are visible swastikas on our totes, we will not be fooled into sporting the hateful, vile messages that the ZARA label now represents. I, for one, will not think twice about walking straight past all ZARA stores from here on out, as sad as it makes me to do so. And, while our individual gestures may seem small, in this case, the message sent by the clothes we do not wear will be exceptionally strong.

Maybe it’s her innate chic-ness. Maybe it’s her close friendship with Victoria Beckham. Association by proximity? Although, that same argument could be made for Ms. Beckham, as well. Either way, consistency is certainly not the bat with which Mrs. Tom Cruise has chosen to play ball, as the “plans” for her clothing line have been shuffled around in what’s known as The Ol’ Switcheroo, regardless of how great the designs themselves may turn out to be.

The former Dawson’s Creek star (as I still prefer to fondly remember her) was originally slated to do a collaborative line for Armani—a shocker in and of itself, as no fashion house of Armani’s stature has ever before joined with a non-professional designer in such a way. What’s more, the collection was going to be for toddlers. Yes, toddlers. All inspired by Katie’s own stylish daughter, Suri, of course. (Her—ehem, her-mother-on-her-behalf’s—style is, after all, inspiring toddlers across the world....) The line was, theoretically, going to have debuted in the spring of 2009, with a collection for “older children” to follow in the fall (now). This, in turn, would supposedly be succeeded by women’s clothing and handbag collections by fall 2010.

And yet, where are the Armani-clad toddlers, compliments of Katie?

Hence, The Ol’ Switcheroo. Instead of debuting her collection for the high-fashion fixture, the red carpet maven has seen spring 2009 come and go, and has had her reps announce (without mention of the aforesaid, uncompleted collection that seemed to mysteriously drop off the map) that she will be doing a line with her stylist, Jeanne Yang. According to Women’s Wear Daily, her new plans include a fall 2009 collection of “premium” women’s clothes, which will be sold at L.A.’s Maxfield, the West Coast equivalent of Barney’s or Bergdorf’s, and—what’s this?—a toddler collection inspired by Suri. I guess one thing did stay the same.

Although there was much ado about Matthew Williamson’s new line for H&M, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. True, Williamson’s line seemed to hold more promise than most lower-end designer collaborations, but it still managed to come up short.

The potential lay in the design factor; as discussed previously, Williamson spared no creative juices when concocting the pieces, as each separate reflected the same great design quality as those he sent down the runway. Cut, color, even materials (silk was a primary construction component) were all of Collection caliber—or so it seemed.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 257px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SiDDGhKlIWI/AAAAAAAAAIc/316lQN6PylE/s400/matthew-williamson-h-and-m-collection-ss09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341483674810786146" />

Unfortunately, great designs and top-notch materials are futile if the product doesn’t fit properly, which is, regrettably, the case in this instance. Granted, Atlanta didn’t receive the full line (being a smaller market, they are only set to sell select items), so the critique only goes as far as those pieces. But if the Atlanta assortment is any indication, sales don’t bode well for the rest of the line, either. Low-hanging armholes stick out like strange wings if more than an A-cup is added to the equation; pants are cut so slim that sitting is restricted; bathing suit bottoms don’t flatter any behind over a size 0. On a positive note, though, the scarves and bags appear to work for everyone. Riiiiiight...

The limited Williamson variety at the Atlantic Station store was disappointment enough, but when even those few items weren’t cut correctly it only added insult to injury. Such excitement shot down with an unflattering fit. At least it’s clear now why H&M chose mannequins (as opposed to real, live models) on which to display the complete collection on their website.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 302px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SgornlrZSMI/AAAAAAAAAHo/brlrX93_eyA/s400/bendelgirl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335124667702790338" />

In a shocking recent announcement, Henri Bendel revealed that the esteemed and established retailer is going to cease selling clothing. The startling change (a reaction to the trying economic times) will take effect this summer, leaving the Bendel's stores to focus solely on beauty products and accessories.

Now, you may be thinking, “No clothes? Bendel’s isn’t ‘Bendel’s’ without clothes!” Well, my fashion-focused friends, you’re right. The Bendel’s that’s been making its way since 1895—the Bendel’s we’ve all come to know and love—is no more, both literally and figuratively speaking. Beginning with the elimination of one of its three floors in the historic Fifth Avenue flagship store, a multitude of changes and developments are to take place within the company, leaving the face of Bendel’s almost unrecognizable.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 116px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/Sgoti1coBsI/AAAAAAAAAIA/54Kp79L_6Uc/s200/stockists_new.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335126785059718850" />

Additional alterations include a broadening of the Bendel’s brand, with a focus on beauty and gift items to be packaged in boxes, cartons, and bags bearing those iconic signature brown and white stripes. Stepping further away still from the “store of shops” concept of previous times, the department store is expanding with a series of accessories-only stores, which will pop up in malls across America this year.

Bendel’s?? In malls??!! We’re certainly not in New York anymore, Toto.

In the latest high-fashion-meets-affordability collaboration, Matthew Williamson joins the ranks with one of the most spot-on lines I’ve seen in a while. Although the more reasonably priced products are always on trend, more often than not, there is a visible difference between a designer’s high-end collection and low-end counterpart. The pieces Williamson produced for H&M, however, skimp neither on quality nor on runway authenticity. A major proponent of springtime jewel-tones, Williamson brings the same consciousness to H&M while the Swedish shop brings the price point down to a level most can handle. The collection will be available at select stores nationwide starting April 23 (at Atlanta’s Atlantic Station location on May 14).

Beloved both for his designs, as well as for his unique, trademark terminology, Christian Siriano, winner of Project Runway Season 4, turned out a “fierce” collection for Fall Fashion Week 2009 at Bryant Park. Contrary to many designers, Siriano’s looks didn’t stop at the ankles; his fancy footwear was not only the hottest thing walking down the runway, it was also likely the most affordable. The hott (yes, with two “Ts”) heels were designed exclusively for Payless Shoesource and will debut in stores this fall.

The fall 2009 collections present lots of sheer in the form of lace, overlay, insets, accents and complete pieces. Sexy though it may be, it can quickly go too far, leaving the realm of what’s “ready to wear,” and entering the world of put-a-cami-on-under-there. Some designers hit the nail on the head, while others could have left a bit more to the imagination. Here are a variety of looks from some of the biggest proponents of the trend:

Note to wearers: While sheer may be all the rage, do not—I repeat, DO NOT—think you can kill two birds by wearing your teddy as a top. It may be sheer, but it still looks like lingerie.

Cue the music! Start the parade! Light the fireworks! The opening date has finally been announced and it’s gonna be good… At 11am on April 2nd, Topshop will open the doors of the new, U.S. location on Broadway and Broome Street in Soho, NY.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 285px; height: 105px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/ScxQBoWmArI/AAAAAAAAAFE/_S01H8wvO4E/s400/bbb-240309.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317713248959988402" />

The celebration will be huge so you won’t want to miss it; stop by for complementary hair styling, makeovers and manicures while you jam to music spun by live DJs. Enter to win a trip to London, including airfare, hotel accommodations and a major shopping spree at the UK flagship store. And as if that weren’t enough to draw you in, Kate Moss has chosen to use this event to launch her new collection instore. It tends to fly off the racks, so you’ll have to make your appearance early if you want to see it, much less snag a piece of it. And for all you academics out there, students get a 10% discount year ‘round—so remember to remind the cashier in spite of the rush through checkout.

Turning Heads

I do wish the videographer hadn't chosen the most awkward freeze-frame of me for her title shot, but at least she likes my style!

Fill in the blank to make the following statement true: The designs shown at Fall 2009 Fashion Week were not _____.

a) chic
b) diverse
c) wearable
d) original

If you answered “d” then you answered correctly. Congratulations! You’ve won an all-inclusive trip for two down my personal memory lane. (C’mon, you are reading my blog, after all. What’d you expect?)

There were many similarities between my experience at Fall 2009 Fashion Week and that of last September’s Spring 2009 Fashion Week. Most of these similarities would be considered positive: the entertainment-factor was high, the gift bags were full, the after party invites were incoming. It’s too bad, really, that I was distracted from all these perks by a preoccupation with a far more glaring similarity—a similarity that created in me a sensation one hopes never to encounter along the runway: Déjà vu.

Though all the cool-weather creations were beautiful, many were a bit too familiar for comfort. Pants were still tapered, bedazzlement was still “in” and jumpers still dominated the runway. Yet, no one seemed to notice the big, pink (or, in this case, black) elephant posing at the end of the catwalk.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 371px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/ScrFTBfXhII/AAAAAAAAAE8/u-Ux5rI2FwI/s400/Tibi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317279240672478338" />

Apparently, as the economy plummets, so, too, does inventiveness. Why this is the case, I’m not certain. I mean, ingenuity doesn’t cost a thing, so what exactly is the excuse here? Am I mistaken, or is “create original designs” not the first bullet point in the job description? Nevertheless, we can always find a silver lining, and in this case it is an opportunity to pinch a few pennies. As we await the bailout plan for this creativity crisis, just follow this advice: Hang onto what you’ve got—you’ll need it again next season.

Prime example: Thursday night, March 26, Bill Hallman is teaming up with Emory University's Atlanta Young Alumni and the Caucus of Emory Black Alumni to put on a fashion show benefiting children's leukemia research at Emory. From 7-9 pm you can enjoy wine, cheese, and free reign of the store. $7 tickets include a $2 donation to Emory's Children Leukemia Research Fund, but with a discount of 15% off your total purchase that night, you can feel free to throw in some extra tax-deductible donation dough. No, that's not the wine going to your head—it’s the feeling you get from doing some good.

Madam Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, and fellow citizens, I write you tonight because something very important has surfaced regarding relations with our long-time friend and fashion-forward ally, Britain. I must admit, I’m not sure of the exact moment when this change was instated, but it was brought to my attention just as soon as any American style-leader can hope to become aware of something so culture-changing: TOPSHOP NOW SHIPS TO THE UNITED STATES!!! Since 1964, much to the dismay of the chic American people, Topshop has been holding out on us, but now—no more...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SfIHTd0hXGI/AAAAAAAAAG0/8dPWXXrk4s4/s320/Topshop+tank.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328329340136545378" />

This UK-based style authority has long been a favorite of mine, providing über-stylish options at unbelievably reasonable prices. Granted, the brand isn’t as dirt-cheap as Forever 21, but it’s still way under-priced for the high-quality, original designs that are offered. From perfectly cut basics to envelope-pushing (even avant-garde at times) trendsetters, Topshop has options for day and night, both casual and fancy, at prices you’ll be able to swing. Plus, they offer exclusive collaborations and designer lines (like Kate Moss for Topshop) that bring to the masses (or bring the masses to) designers that you wouldn’t usually see in such an affordable arena.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 101px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SfIDbo9QAzI/AAAAAAAAAGU/xn6g8k54SDI/s320/km-us-220409.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328325082518389554" />

When in the past I’ve been forced to search for such unmatched perfection—usually to no avail—on ebay, now I can go directly to the source. What’s more, Topshop will be opening up their first stateside flagship store this spring. (Rumor has it the boutique could open as early as this month.) The much-anticipated, premiere location will be stationed in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, an area highly regarded as a shopping destination with a unique and upscale flair.

So to you, my fellow fashion followers, I pose this challenge: Ask not what your style can do for you, but what Topshop can do for your style.

Coming Soon: Where To Shop Vintage

Compilation of a list of vintage stores is in progress. Grandma’s costume jewelry becomes priceless (even though it’s probably only worth about 20 bucks). Granddad’s old cardigans are like gold. Vintage stores offer more hope and promise than the church with the billboard down the street and, suddenly, you’re kicking yourself for donating those so totally ugly-cool, oversized-at-the-time flannel oxfords you were handed down from your cousin back in middle school. When it comes to getting dressed, the time to hesitate is through—don’t waste time pairing the perfect shirt and skirt; just throw on whatever’s lying around. It’s sure to pass as grungy-chic, right?

With the lackadaisical attitude surrounding vintage clothing, it’s easy to cease thinking altogether about what you’re putting on your body—an approach I do not recommend as the result could prove utterly humiliating. Here are some basic tips to help you avoid looking like a complete time warp in public:

1) Do NOT dress head to toe in vintage. Instead, integrate vintage pieces into your modern wardrobe. A pencil skirt here, a cardigan there. Maybe sport a vintage tee with your designer jeans. Regardless of what you pick and choose, you should never have on more vintage pieces than you do current.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SaTMFI0R8RI/AAAAAAAAAD8/9V1mPOqEp4E/s320/NO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306590649587462418" />

2) Keep in mind what’s trendy today when shopping for items from yesteryear. By having pieces that appear to be up-to-date, you’ll be playing it a bit safer and are sure to attract positive attention. People will want to know, “who makes that awesome necklace,” and you’ll be able to proudly tell them, “it’s vintage,” dashing their hopes of ever having something as magnificent as what you’ve got. Don’t feel bad. They’ll find their own fabulous vintage-wear.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SaTPMq19waI/AAAAAAAAAEc/w5SC3SzlsUQ/s320/Yes2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306594077515301282" />3) Undoubtedly, the safest way to incorporate vintage elements into your personal style is by way of accessories. A necklace, hat or handbag is less likely to dramatically change your overall appearance. This is the best route for those more hesitant vintage-curious dressers. Nevertheless, you should still strive to be a little adventurous when picking out your “safe” vintage items—go for the brightly colored bag or the obnoxiously bejeweled faux-diamond necklace over the bland, plastic ‘20s-style pearls. Vintage is about celebrating the history of fashion, so why put something on that could be easily looked over? In the words of my favorite 1980’s icon, “express yourself!”

Down in Tribeca, monstrous chandeliers were hung. An arch was constructed. Models were dressed. A crowd of spectators was assembled. There was an air of maturity and respect in the air. People maintained composure as they excitedly recognized familiar faces. Photographers resisted scrambling for shots of any celebrity attendees. As guests found their seats in the converted showroom, the anticipation level reached “Palpable.” The scene was set for (arguably) the most anticipated event of the week: the Ralph Lauren runway show.

Ralph’s designs are always clean, well tailored, classic. Although his clothes are always gorgeous, each collection isn’t necessarily original. Not that that’s a bad thing; his recognizable style is what keeps long-time, as well as first-time, wearers coming back again and again. The women of the world wear Ralph because it’s exactly what they’re looking for—so why change a thing?

But these days it’s all about mixing it up—literally. Mixing textures, mixing prints, mixing vintage with modern. So it should come as no surprise when the king of “everywoman” fashion decided to do a little mixing on his own Fall 2009 runway.

Using tough leather belts or a twill jacket to accessorize flowing, feminine frocks, Ralph Lauren managed to incorporate the menswear he’s perfected into even the most formal of looks. A brilliant move, really, for now there’s no occasion to which a woman can’t justify wearing her classic, rough, riding-style sport jacket. Suddenly, R.L. is able to penetrate all facets of life; from a dinner at the in-laws’ to a black-tie charity banquet, there’s nowhere your Ralph can’t go with you.

Examples from the Fall 2009 collection:

At the risk of sounding redundant, Monarchy Collection’s fall 2009 collection served up a second helping of the leather-clad “tough girl” look that I so loved at Charlotte Ronson. Although Monarchy also incorporated plaid, the effect it had was completely different: In contrast to the laid-back, boyfriend vibe of Ronson’s collection, this one had a restricted air about it, reminiscent of military or equestrian getups. This was achieved using darker colored tartans and by incorporating details such as a double breast on a jacket or a high neck on a blouse.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IpJ5x-21DLY/SZ8HC1qa4FI/AAAAAAAAACc/BmA_AEVOnXY/s400/Monarchy+Collection_FW09DLR_Monarchy_011_large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304966631411867730" />

The flavor was worked into the men’s collection, as well, finished with neckties and vests and resulting in a sophisticated and authoritative look. Whether you’re staying in the office or heading out and about, sharp looks like this are sure to have ladies everywhere snapping to attention:

I like it a CharLOTTE.

Fashion Week Follow-Up

I have to say, although her designs are darling, I’ve not been a big fan of Charlotte Ronson’s work in the past. Her previous, play-clothes style tended to exude “sweet” and “serene” a bit too much for my taste though, clearly, not for others’, as her line has been quite a market success. The collection she showed for fall/winter 2009, however, was marching to the beat of a very differnt drum. It seems she put Peter, Paul and Mary back on the shelf in favor of mixing some old-school Aerosmith with the ever-popular Nirvana—a shuffle I am strongly in favor of. Translation: Leather, leather, leather… and some grunge-inspired plaid and floral.

Not a single piece went by that didn’t make me ooh or ahh. If a jacket was leaning too far toward Serene, she jazzed it up with some sequins or rocked it out with some cutouts. Her geometric tailoring was to die for, as shoulders were constructed up and out and pants were slouched and tucked. But, above all, one long, skinny pair of pants stood tall to represent the entire collection in my mind: The leather fringe pants.

Not only are these pants rockin’ on the runway, but they are totally wearable. If you ask me, these are the pant equivalent of the mullet: Business in the front; party in the back. And, unlike the mullet, I like it. From the front, the pants are your typical leather pants, which are predicted to be huge for fall/winter. What sets this particular pair of pants apart, though, is the long leather fringe hanging from the bottom of each of the two back slash pockets. This adds character, as well as movement, as the strands sway to and fro, tangling and detangling with each step you may take or each move you might bust. So go ahead—shake your groove thing. And tell ‘em the pants made you do it.

Too expensive, in fact, for an unpaid editorial intern living in New York, which is what I was at the time I stumbled (quite literally) upon two pairs of really great shoes strewn about in the footwear fallout of the annual Barney’s shoe sale of 2007. Shoes that would, under any other circumstances, be handled with care are tossed aside mercilessly so that greedy, finger-wiggling women may more swiftly reach the pair they’re after. Beautiful leather is scratched and scuffed from the pointed toes of shuffling Manolos kicking them around until they end up under the shelves and out of the way. Wooden platforms are nicked and knocked up from being pounded (not placed) back onto the metal rack after an unpleasant encounter with a disobliging, swollen foot. Such is the scene in which I met two of the great, unrequited shoe loves of my life.

Enter the Lanvin Gladiator Sandal.

Its T-strap simplicity makes it classic and versatile while the Lucite heel adds an unexpected punch, revealing the mechanical, inner support system that holds a woman five inches above the ground. Gorgeous. A shoe guaranteed to get as much use as it does flattery. And at 70% off, who could resist? Unless, of course, that person is me, who lacked the necessary cash to purchase the wearable art, even if it was a comparative steal.

It bears mention that the use of Lucite was a decisively risky move, as it is a material usually associated with the professional removal of all attire besides Lucite-built shoes. Marc Jacobs recently tested the waters with a similar design and failed miserably, as far as I am concerned:

The square heel of this simple pump, contrary to the chic, sleek Lanvin cone heel, reads “clunky,” “heavy” and “outdated.” Furthermore, by placing the housed stiletto heel off to the side, the singular focus of the Marc Jacobs heel becomes the translucent nature of Lucite—a characteristic that is as boring as the design, lacking the dimension and depth the Lanvin heel gains from the embedded, exposed screw-age positioned in the center.

Moving on to a seemingly less practical “statement” shoe, let us touch on the Proenza Schouler Yellow Python Pumps. (I’m not certain that this is the designer-designated name of the shoe, but if you had any idea how hard it was to find a mere picture of the pumps, I’m sure you’d appreciate the lack of official information out there regarding these shoes these days.)

This is a shoe that is surely less multipurpose than the aforementioned Gladiator Sandal…. Or is it? The traditional shape of the shoe allows it to be inserted most anywhere a regular pump is needed, while the bright yellow color adds that certain je ne se quoi that has become an increasingly popular incorporation into the wardrobes of the world. Meanwhile, the texture of the python skin makes edgier even the most boring black ensemble without being as distracting as one might expect. Great for catching a show, hitting a club or grabbing a club sandwich. These shoes would go with everything. But, given that I spotted these beauties sitting on a full-priced display, tauntingly adjacent to the still overpriced sale section, it would not be my fate to own such fabulous footwear. Hence, unrequited shoe love, albeit more money in my pocket.
